Jordan vs LeBron: defense
On the record, Jordan was the better defender: he won Defensive Player of the Year in 1987–88, made nine All-Defensive First Teams to LeBron's five and won three steals titles. LeBron's case rests on versatility: he has guarded all five positions, and his chase-down blocks are among the most famous defensive plays of his era.
| Jordan | LeBron | |
|---|---|---|
| Defensive Player of the Year | 1 | 0 |
| All-Defensive First Team | 9 | 5 |
| All-Defensive selections | 9 | 6 |
| Steals titles | 3 | 0 |
| Career steals per game | 2.3 | 1.5 |
| Career blocks per game | 0.8 | 0.7 |
What the numbers miss
Steals and blocks are a narrow window on defense, and both players were valued for things the box score doesn't count. Jordan was a perimeter stopper who took the other team's best guard. LeBron, at 6 ft 9 in, has switched onto centers and point guards in the same Finals series, which is a different kind of value and much harder to put a number on.
Questions
Did LeBron ever win Defensive Player of the Year?
No. He finished second in voting twice but never won it. Jordan won it once, in 1987–88, the same season he led the league in scoring.
Who had more steals per game?
Jordan, 2.3 a game to LeBron's 1.5, and Jordan led the league in steals three times.
Statistics are drawn from the NBA's official records and Basketball-Reference and are current through the 2025–26 regular season unless noted. LeBron James is still active, so his career totals change. Spotted an error? Tell us.
